Vivienne Westwood Does Not Want You To Buy Fast Fashion

Vivienne Westwood is no stranger to making a bold statement. After all, it was her punk-meets-chic designs and attitude that threw the fashion world for a loop and made her one of the most sought-after designers for models and celebrities.

And who wouldn't want to work with her? Over the years, Westwood has revolutionized the industry by starting conversations about fashion's impact on the environment and by challenging gender norms by throwing co-ed fashion shows. Here's just one example of Westwood using her public platform to fight against ecocide:

Though she's never been shy about sharing her beliefs, her latest comments on the harmfulness of rampant consumerism, especially when it comes to fashion, seemed to shock even her staunchest supporters.

While speaking at Zaladno's Bread & Butter preview, Westwood offered the crowd of haute couture aficionados some surprising advice, according to InStyle.

"Don't buy anything," she told a stunned crowd.

Wait, did one of the most renowned fashion designers just tell people to put down their credit cards and not purchase a single thing? Yes, but with good reason.

As InStyle points out, Westwood has long been known for saying, "Buy less, choose better, and make it last." Now, it appears she's ready to take things to the next level.

"If you want to be bold, you have to make a choice," she told her audience. "And at least 50 percent of the people in the world have never made a choice or decision in their lives. They just follow their desire and consume: opinions, McDonald's, whatever."

Sadly, the "whatever" seems to include that totally cute, yet super pair of platforms that you'll only wear three times. But hear Westwood out!

"Buying less and choosing quality means that designers can make better fashion, not just lead by marketing and commercial interests," she said. "Fashion is part of culture, but not at the moment."

Westwood's comments come at an important time. Not only is fast fashion changing the way shoppers think (and therefore changing popular culture), it's also hurting people and the environment by paying horribly low wages, fostering child labor, expelling massive amounts of energy, relying on crude oil, and releasing harsh chemicals and pollutants from factories.

So, though Westwood's call to ditch that summer sale might sound extreme, it's certainly not as bad as the possible consequences.

Cannes Film Festival wardrobe

The story behind Jessica Chastain's exquisite Cannes Film Festival wardrobe

Cannes Film Festival came to an end on Sunday evening, and with it ten days of dazzling glamour. While a plethora of actresses and supermodels, from Bella Hadid to Diane Kruger and Nicole Kidman, took their turns on La Croisette's famous red carpet throughout the festival, there was one consistently best-dressed star who, by virtue of her place on the jury, was a constant elegant presence at the premieres, photo calls and parties which punctuate the event.

It may come as something of a surprise then to learn that for Jessica Chastain and her stylist Elizabeth Stewart, the fashion element of jury duty was first and foremost a pragmatic exercise in putting together a wardrobe which would make getting dressed the one effortless element amongst her tightly-packed juror's schedule.

After all, as Chastain said in her powerful closing remarks on Sunday (in which she spoke out about the 'disturbing' representation of women in the festival's entries), she had to watch 20 films in 10 days besides attending all those engagements.

"She was very concerned with her jury duties so our thoughts were mostly practical," Stewart, who has worked with Chastain for the past six years, explains. "Mostly it was about making getting dressed as easy as possible so as not to distract from the jury responsibilities."

Of course, an A-list actress's version of 'easy' is somewhat exceptional. Stewart began to commission custom gowns around a month before proceedings kicked off, turning in large part to designers with whom Chastain already had a long-running and close relationship. "It makes fittings go more smoothly," says Stewart.

Her first red carpet look of the festival, a delicately floral and bird embroidered black column dress by Alexander McQueenn, was the result of one such collaboration. "We have a very long history with Sarah," says Stewart of the label's creative director, Sarah Burton. "She made Jessica’s first Oscar dress. She just understands Jessica’s vibe completely." In fact, there were parallels between that first McQueen dress in 2012 and the Cannes creation- the embroidery against an elegantly simple black dress which looked immaculate with Chastain's red hair and porcelain complexion.

Miss Universe competition

Muslim beauty queen wins the right not to wear bikini in Miss Universe competition

A Muslim woman has won the right not to pose in a bikini in the Miss Universe GB competition.

Muna Juma, 27, from London, will stand on stage among her fellow finalists wearing a kaftan, rather than the traditional bikini.

Juma, who co-founded Cloudless Research, a startup which aims to tackle illegal migration and child abuse in East Africa, originally applied for the competition two years ago, but withdrew over concerns about having to wear the swimwear, which is against her religious beliefs.
